Pickleballer in the 808 Emely Berkowitz

Honolulu—This Pickleballer in the 808 has been described as Miss Aloha at the Courts, perpetually smiling and chatting and making you feel welcome. In fact, when I posted a preview of this feature on social media, it garnered comments like “Yay! We love Em!”

Emely Berkowitz is a much-loved fixture at the courts, finding time to play when not babysitting her adorable granddaughter. She plays with her hubby Marty, and together, they’re another fine example of a PB couple who can play together and stay married LOL!

It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Pickleballer in the 808 Emely Berkowitz!

Where did you grow up and what high school did you go to?

I grew up in the Aliamanu neighborhood and went to Radford High School.

How did you discover pickleball and when did you start playing?

Through the Meetup App in 2021. When Covid restrictions slowly eased, I looked up pickleball on the Meetup App and sent a message to OPA Host (see text exchange below).

What do you love most about pickleball?

There is so much to love about pickleball, and for me, I love the physical workout, learning to play the sport, personal and team challenge, meeting and making new friends, time and flexibility to play on the courts, the pickleball community, and that anyone can join in on the fun to play pickleball.

What do you do outside of pickleball (hobbies, work, school, etc)?

I work from home and love babysitting my granddaughter, loving up and spending time with family and friends, Zumba, golf and walking our dog!

What paddle are you playing with?

Engage Pursuit RX 6.0

How often do you play?

3-4 times a week

What is the next goal you’re working toward (in PB or otherwise)?

Anything that improves my pickleball game (haha) and being the best Grandma!

Anything else on your mind?

Yes! If my husband didn’t say or give me the look of “Why did you mess up that shot?”, I’d play pickleball with him more often! LOL! (I play with him all the time.)
