Pickleballer in the 808: Rika Riordan
Honolulu—While browsing Instagram, I was elated to find that there was a group organized for the purpose of bringing Japanese and Hawai’i pickleball players together. The Japan Hawai’i Pickleball Association’s mission is to “bring the Japanese and American pickleball communities together and to provide resources that help mitigate the language and cultural barriers of playing a sport in a different country.”
At the helm of the JHPA is “Pickleballer in the 808” Rika Riordan.
As the Chair of JHPA, Rika is passionate about spreading the joy and love for pickleball to Japan and creating a culture of inclusivity where Hawai’i players and Japanese players can play together here locally and in Japan.

Where did you grow up and what high school did you go to?
I grew up in Tokyo, Japan and went to Gakushuion High School.
How did you discover pickleball and when did you start playing?
When I walked down Kapiolani Park, I found people playing pickleball at Diamond Head Tennis Court.
Just before COVID, I played pickleball a couple of times, but unfortunately, everything closed down due to the pandemic. I returned to playing pickleball seriously in November 2022.
What do you do outside of pickleball?
Zumba instructor. Unfortunately, I’m not teaching anymore…I’m too busy and my focus is on pickleball.
What made you decide to start the JHPA?
In Japan, pickleball is not as popular as it is here in the US, and many people are unaware of its existence. I’m enthusiastic about introducing pickleball to Japanese communities and serving as a bridge between Japan and Hawaii to foster a connection through this enjoyable sport.
Tell us about the mission of JHPA and the events JHPA has planned and hosted.
Last May, we kicked off with an event introducing pickleball at TAC (Tokyo Athletic Club) and throughout the past year, we held four camps.
We also participated in the Tokyo Shibuya Sports Festival.
In Tokyo, we’ve established JHPA circles in Shibuya, Minato, American Club, and the U.S. Embassy, enjoying play 3-4 times a week.
This year, we’re preparing for the Asia’s first Championship Tournament in December, featuring top American pros. We’re collaborating with pickleball enthusiasts in Hawaii and looking forward to widespread participation.
What is the pickleball scene like in Japan?
Mostly playing in indoor gyms.
What do you love most about pickleball?
Everything!
I played tennis in college, so it was easy to start.
But I believe pickleball indeed has unique qualities that make it inclusive and enjoyable for everyone, with no gender, age, or community barriers.
It’s wonderful how the sport brings people together across these dimensions.
What paddle are you currently playing with?
Selkirk. I’m advocate of Selkirk.
How often do you play?
Mostly every day, sometimes double headers!
Mahalo Rika and thank you for all you do to connect the Japan-Hawai’i pickleball communities!
